Word around the Hat is his wife and kids changed their mind. Who knows? Seems weird he'd jump back to Newcap after getting canned by them a couple months earlier but maybe he's got a short memory. Maybe this was planned by Newcap all along? Why not move him and Tera Lee to Red Deer at the same time. Somethings not adding up.
I don't think so. I don't think NC knew that Greg #1 was going to make the jump to Fort Mac. They appeared to be blindsided by that, and then were caught in a scramble while they tried to hire for THAT spot, plus a MS Host in Brooks and a copywriter in RD. I think it was more good fortune for both RD and Shannon that this happened. I mean, what a glorious opportunity to take a MS that was together just months earlier and re-join them. Should make for some interesting radio in Central Alberta. I was always a fan of Greg's from the CMT days, and when I first started in radio he was doing his Countdown show on Sunday nights. Hope it works out for all involved...
Off topic, but if your were raised in McMurray and your family is still there, it's one of the best places to live. Scenery, friendly neighbors (cuz most are Newfies), good hockey team, all the bigbox stores, a ton of trails, a lake (which is rare in AB)...plus your house will always appreciate in value (recession-proof! as long as oil is needed).
Oh for sure...I had an opportunity to go there at one point and turned it down, just because I didn't feel like being in a financial hole due to high rent, but if you've got family up there, I'm sure it's an awesome place to be!! It's supposed to be beautiful up there...
I doubt it's a NC plan. Greg's a country boy...seems perfect to make the move to a beautiful city with a good country station. And since TL is there, even better. Those two have a bond/chemistry that makes great radio.
KG did the right thing by bringing Greg on board. Sucks for the Hatters, but that's radio. Doors never close. Unless you're like Edm and slam it shut in your face...
If it were me, and I got my ass fired for no reason, I wouldn't be giving NC the time of day. However, Greg obviously didn't burn the bridge behind him on the way out of Big Earl. Good to see TL and GS back together. I know them both, and wish them great ratings!!!
OK, maybe I'm seeing this different than most.....
Guy gets turfed by company, gets on with a new independant start-up as PD/Morning show and was obviously planned on having the station built around him... then bails out a MONTH later and goes back to the company that turfed him.
I don't know Greg Shannon and am sure he had his reasons, but... geez. Doesn't anybody think that this kinda seems like a douchebag move????
It wasn't like he moved back to his hometown - HE WENT TO A NEW CITY!!!
With all the complaining and crying that goes on on PSR about how the corporations and management have no regard for their employees, moves like this and nobody batting an eye on what he did??? God, is it any wonder that we're just treated like numbers.

Well .. let's flip 180-degrees on the last part of this and get another viewpoint.....
For the record, I don't know Greg either .. and neither do I know why he jumped ship so quickly to go to his new post. Granted, the optics do not look good .. and I'm not sure whether I would have done the same to a new station which may have been counting on some of the experience listed in my resume. But .. questioning whether this is why we might be treated just like numbers ??? This move may simply be a reflection of the fact that many of us ARE treated like numbers in the first place .. and sometimes that counting is done by 'bean counters' who know nothing about the industry .. but are only doing so to balance the numbers for the shareholders. Tis a sad fact of what commerce and business have become in the last decade or so .. and it only serves to generate anything but a sense of loyalty from anyone involved in it.

the radio business is small and reputations are hard to shake. If it was a douchebag move, it will haunt him down the line. I have no idea of the circumstances to why he left, so it's hard to judge.

'Douchebag' is a very bad word choice.
But you're right, but actions speaks louder than words. newcap took him back; that says he's got to be a good guy.
But red deer is not true newcap...so there's wouldn't be any hard feelings there anyway. That's why he's 'back'. I find it weird that two morning guy back-to-back would have the first name.
Tera lee is co-host. What ever happened to the Jen co-host? Wasn't she co-hosting with the 1st Greg?

I do believe that the "1st Greg" was/is married to Jen and she stepped off air once kids entered the picture. Could be a smart move for Rogers up in Fort Mac if that's still the case, as they may have just scored themselves 2 for the price of 1 if she decides to get back in the game at some point.
I think there has been a few ``Co-hosts`` in Red Deer...you know, damn those ladies for getting pregnant! I just think it`s interesting to re-unite a morning show team from a station that was just imploded (na na na na naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa GOOD BYEEEEEEEE EARLLLLLLLLLLLLLL)
And bring them into another like 2 shiny golden gods, unscarred.
Whether or not Big Earl died because of the morning show...mid days...overnights...or whatever...
It`s kind of like making a sequel to waterworld. Lots of hype...but commercially and critically...it died
Agreed the morning show wasn't the demise of Big Earl. Just not sure I would trust the same company that just fired my ass less a month later. And maybe this is really old fashioned and doesn't hold water in this day and age, but if you make a commitment to a company and they invest in you and you then dishonor that commitment, what does it say about your integrity? I guess it matters not in today's cut throat world. Just on the surface it looks bad. But then again, should he really care what we all think?
Big Earl was doomed from the start and it didn't have anything to do with their jocks, some of whom were very good, including Greg Shannon. Big Earl decided to go after the young country audience, which has made CISN a power house, and the older country audience, which is loyal to CFCW (Big Earl's mother, if you will), and in the process didn't really appeal to anybody. It never really could identify with any target audience.
Greg Shannon is a husband and a parent, and I betcha he made his decisions based on what he felt was the best way to support his family in the industry he knows best. Good for him and Tera Lee having the good fortune to end up back together.
