While this thread has gone waaaaay of course, I don't think the cost of housing matters to Mr. Dubois anyway - I'd be willing to bet he's still living at home.
He probably is..because he can't find a place to live. Even University students can't find housing and there are many, many ads asking people to open up their homes if they have an extra bed.
I don't think making fun of someone because they are forced to live at home in a city that has close to a zero vacancy rate is appropriate.

There's worse things in life.
He should probably ask for a raise in his allowance.
Um..a decent condo will sell for well over 200k. A friend of mine just bought a 3 bd town home for 350k. Yes, that's a row home. Little yard. One parking spot. And, he got them down from 397k.
Nevermind, the wages don't match the increase in the cost of living. Minimum wage is still under 9bucks/hour, and a one bedroom apt. will rent for 750/month. And then they wonder why people move away.
See, I said "suspect areas". That's PC for ghetto.
Interesting how much of the latter part of this thread was also part of a special feature on the Mother Corp last evening; -- what with rental costs (as well as other costs as well) spiralling in Saskatoon and very little in the way of rental accommodation (affordable and other wise). The report mentioned that even Saskatchewan's "Quint" program .. (which buys rundown homes and fixes them up to provide affordable housing for those who otherwise would likely be homeless) .. cannot find enough housing of that nature to provide for those who really need them. ... and there is also a labour shortage reported .. to the extent that some government workers at both the municipal and provincial level are leaving those jobs for "greener" pastures and stubble. ... let's hope anyone venturing there for jobs in this industry will have large enough salaries to live on from .. because it will be a sad experience if that is not true.....
Okay, seriously. Who in their right mind would want to live in butt-nut Saskabush? If there's a shortage of housing, labour, etc. in sask, it's merely because all the former expats are returning from Alberta and leaving that over-rated hick-ville with their head down in failure with the hope of being able to afford a shack in their hometown and not some sort of enticing boom some people here are posting.
It's basic economics...Supply=demand equals a balanced market. So a few more people fled Alberta back to Saskabush (first time for everything one might suppose). Thus, a slightly overheated housing market (the rest of Canada has experienced this over the past five years). This thread makes it sound like some sort of renaissance is happening and this province is a destination. The rest of Canada knows it's pure desperation at best.
Seriously, ask yourself, do you really know anyone interested in re-locating to to Regina or Saskatoon from elesewhere in Canada? And DON'T say it's for a gig in radio. 13 year old kids can program their ipod's better than what goes on in these lazy boondocks. And, have you seen the people in these cities? HELLO, 1993 called looking for their clothes and hairstyles back! Have you driven around saskatoon or vagina? I hope you locked your car doors.
C'mon now. I guess the people in this province have always had some sort of inferiority complex and they are now taking a couple of non-negative stats and trying to run with them...I apologize for the rant, just stumbled on this thread...It needed to be addressed with an alternate and realistic point of view.

Hugs and kisses!
With a rant like that .. I think the operative word is "stumbling" .. as what has caused you to lose your equilibrium .. or become so bitter ??? This is not a sense of "reality" in the eyes of many who choose to move to Saskatchewan .. and I question whether it really be "reality" even in your eyes once your pounding headache disappears.....
Okay, I admit, maybe one too many beer and a keyboard do not mix well! Not to take anything away from the fine folks in the skatch province. If that's their reality and they are comfortable with it, than so be it. My point is this. Out here in the east, we have peaks and ploughs, primarily the manufacturing sector gets hit and people lose jobs, etc. things get a little rough. When times are good, you don't hear people from the GTA and surrounding areas rave about the fact that housing is too expensive, rents are increasing, vacancy is low, etc. Who in their right mind would want to brag about this as if it's a sign of prosperity - (this seems to be the tone of this thread unlesss I misinterpret something). I would think that would be a further turn-off not to come to a geographic region or even consider job opportunities (especially when you can reside elsewhere amongst real ammenities and attractions, etc). Folks in Alberta have been doing this for years and you can easily see people are moving away from there now too.
From my perspective (and I know am not the only one), there is some real disconnect from the prairies and eastern Canada. Having lived in the prairies at one point and now out east, it is ever apparent that there is some sort of weird complex out that way. Some fine people for sure, but why must everyone talk about how things are booming or rent and housing is out of control. Seriously, in my travels through the prairies over the last few years, this is ALL people talk about (next to the weather). It's great and I am happy for you, just thought I would comment because in my findings, the sizzle seems bigger thean the steak.

And, I also echo smashup55 - it is that bad!
Wow. One person's 'weird complex' is another's positive move forward. From a province that's been the butt of jokes since the beginning of Confederation, why shouldn't they get excited when their economy surpasses Alberta's for the first time, when SaskPotash becomes number one on the TSE (worth over 60 billion), when govt' revenues surpass expectations for five years in a row, all with a new PC govt' in power (Sask Party) that's making savy business decisions (nuclear power plants, taking advice from Alberta premiere's, etc.) I say, good for them. They deserve it. Why take that away from them? From what I hear, there are a tonne of jobs available, both blue and white collar....plus, I've been through there, worked with people there, and I've never heard a bad word about anyone else out of their mouths.....good people. I wish them well.
But I guess someone has to perpetuate the stereotype.....how's that ulcer?
I am still questioning the vitriol in some of this thread. I have lived in B-C .. moved from there to Ontario to get my start in this industry .. and where people questioned my sanity ("why would one ever leave God's country?" was their comment) .. went back to B-C .. and then to Alberta. I have also visited many parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba .. and most parts of the Maritimes .. and between all of that, there are very few places which I would question returning to. Lots of people .. including lots from elsewhere in this country .. have made a lot of money living here in this province .. and now the same seems to be happening in Saskatchewan .. which has landscapes as vast and picturesque as anywhere in this country. Admittedly, the roads and highways could use a lot of upgrading .. but that is being worked on .. albeit slowly. The unfortunate part of the economic boom there .. or anywhere else .. is that many people who were part of that region before the boom .. can no longer stay there. Yes .. the boom is talked about .. and talked about .. and discussed ad nauseum. But that is now also true of the economic downturn in Ontario .. and because people are suffering there .. just as much as people are prospering in the west. I do agree that there is a real disconnect between the western and central regions of the country .. and hopefully, "communication" (which also includes really listening to one another) will help to solve some of that.

Unfortunately, the mentality of "let the rich get richer..and the poor get poorer" is in Saskatchewan. The economy is booming, but the wages stay the same. Tell me, who can afford $1000 rent on a 13/hour job..and that's a decent paying job in Sask!
One of the sayings of the Saskatchewan govt. at one time was "No one gets left behind"..but, obviously, that was before the big boom and the fat pockets of the upper class got fatter...
In the end, people will over-extend themselves, and their budget..people will realize that the amenities are not what they would have living in a bigger center, the winters will have it's toll on MANY people that went to Sask, and people will move on...and take the economy with it. People will lose hundreds of thousands of dollars on homes they couldn't afford in the first place..and the people of Saskatchewan will once again be some of the poorest folks around.
....and the people of Saskatchewan will once again be some of the poorest folks around....
Most of what you say, Smashup, is correct; -- that has already happened in Alberta during the past. That was true of the boom of the late 70's until it went bust in the early 80's .. and that is even true of what is happening to many right now. It has often been said that "history has the habit of repeating itself" .. and none of us is so smart that we will quickly learn from what happened in past. Yet .. the statement quoted above only relates to the funds in the bank for many residents .. and somehow I think there is much, much more to life .. than simply what our bank accounts show. Unfortunately, that is also the prevailing attitude of most today.....
Feel free to give me crap, but i just heard about this website tonight after going out with some co-workers. It's obvious I am far out of the loop, was this a website you are directed to when graduating from **BC? Just curious.
Seriously though. I was very entertained as I was reading this thread. I just MAY be that guy who got the drive gig, my last name MAY start with a D and end with an UBOIS...who knows. Anyways, in answer to some questions. Don't live at home, and haven't gotten an allowence increase in almost 6 years...damn...good call on that, I could be getting 29 dollars a week, as opposed to the 20 I was getting back when I was 16. So much for being pro-active. I guess once you start getting paychecks twice a month (for doing good work) you forget about asking Daddy for your allowence. I will check on that though, perhaps if he has had enough beer the night I ask, I may get some back-pay, inflation is a bitch, and 20 just won't cut it anymore.
Besides that (as I believe the housing situation was and still is, the most important topic of this post...screw radio!! lets make sure we know the exact living situation of Mr. Dubois...and i mean the younger, better looking one...not "that" Mr. Dubois) people can give me shit if they feel like it, it's part of the job. Hell, had you told me a year ago that I would one day be more then a producer, I would have laughed at you. My PD happened to see something in me, it's sure not my fault. If I suck, hell, let me know...pat@929thebullrocks.com let me know whether I suck as a DJ, or an MD...I really don't have a preference. Seriously, e-mail me right now. I have turned off the spam filter, so we should be golden.
Ironically I still remember being told the convo that happened between "daddy" and my PD.
Hurk: I really want to make Pat the MD, I think he has it. Vic: Are you sure?? He's really new, I don't know.... Hurk: Trust me, I can sense it Vic: Well...I will leave it up to you then, I hope you're right!
Later on that night when I spoke to Vic on the phone:
Me: Dude...i'm nervous! Vic: Your boss has faith in you..don't screw it up!1 Me: But still....it's almost too much Vic: Suck it up!!! Have some faith in yourself, Hurk knows his shit!
Yeah apparently...that remains to be seen. I am appalled at Vic however...forcing the PD's hand like that?? Horrifying.
Chickofradio (also known as **Y*TA *) I look forward to working with you. If what these guys are saying is any indication...you most certainly have your work cut out for you as I know nothing and will probably be the death of radio in this city.
Look on the bright side at least, The Bull doesn't have Coffeetalk *cough*
Saskatoon can't be that bad? I've only been there once but I have looked into moving there before and from what I saw Saskatoon is cleaner than most cities in Alberta and it's cheaper to live there... Plus we all know what radio people make so that just makes Saskatoon even sweeter.
As far as getting a step up because your daddy... To be honest, this entire time I've been looking at it from the other angle... As a parent I can tell you if it was my daughter I would move heaven and earth to help her get ahead in life. So I can respect that. Having said that, I wouldn't put her into situations that I don't think she can handle.
For his part, Elmer must know that hiring his kid to do a major day part will open both him and his kid up to scrutiny. Why would you want to put that kind of pressure on your child unless you knew they could handle it? Besides, it's probably only a matter of time before the kid moves into sales and maybe one day his experiences will turn him into a pretty well rounded radio guy.
Then again I've never met him, is he a total burnout loser or what?
