I don't really have a point.

I just wanted to make a generic statement about Sonic being the greatest station in history, and an equally generic statement about how loathsome and purile The Bear is.

Not because I believe either statement.

But just to watch all the newbies come on here and agree for the sake of agreeing. It's been a while since there's been a go-nowhere argument between street teamers and commercial dubbers on here.

So right binzer.

The Bear is tired and dusty, that's why their numbers are so good.

I guess being dusty is how you win that best major market station in Canada thing, same with that joke of an award for On Air Talent of the year.

Jeez.

The tired and dusty one would appear to be K-Rock. I haven't heard one positive comment since Evans came back, not one. The music hasn't changed in a decade and they don't seem to promote it as their sister station keeps changing formats thus taking all the promo budget. It'll be interesting to see if they have another bad book in a few weeks and who will take the blame this time?

The awards are not a real barometer of what an audience thinks.  A big company can always get their talent to win awards like that.  That's not saying the Bear didn't deserve to win, but insider awards like that are not a reflection of the audience or the market.  The Bear being a consistent ratings performer for multiple books in a row however is a solid indicator they're doing something right.  Sonic on the other hand is also doing much better than most alt or mod. rock stations do in North America, so they too are proving to be a very solid radio station.

There are many factors a station, while "tired and dusty" performs well.
Big ratings budget? Competition is even worse? Deafult win?
Because they perform well dosen't mean they aren't "Tired and dusty." They are.
And K-ROCK is DEAD.
Sonic. Yep.

your opinion will be heard when you get to hand in your diary. i guess we'll have to trust the diaries handed in by other people for now.

i have to agree on one point, the music on sonic is newer and "fresher"...

it's like ford vs chevrolet, the bottom line is they both do what they do well. you just like one more than the other.

In your opinion perhaps.  But with millions in revenue on the line, where are you suggesting the Bear should do a major overhaul and not be tired and dusty anymore?  Serious, play armchair quarterback on this one.  You have a station that is probably billing 8 figures right now.  Make the changes the Bear needs to not be tired and dusty...but don't lose any money in the process.  I'd like to hear your plan.

People say what they want.

The Bear does well on a consistant basis. The jocks are solid from morning through to weekends. Argue all you want and feel free to toss in your fave Sonic DJ! (a task usually reserved to NAIT students or those who think anything that transpires in a flame war means anything)

Radio people get so caught up in pleasing each other that they forget about the listener. All this talk of being "fresher" and being on the cutting edge doesn't win ratings. Most of the people listening aren't on the cutting edge of anything, aside from living their day to day life.

We sit here judging other stations from the inside out cause this is what we do for a living. No listener gives a rats ass about the intimate drawn out details of our lives, relate to the listner by what THEY are doing. Not by playing a song that they really really need to hearso as to stay cooler than that kid in high school with the sweet iPod.

The Bear could be number one for four years and Sonic could bottom out and do worse than CFCW, and people would still come on here and go on about poor sample groups, and the Bear being tired and stale, and Sonic saving radio in Edmonton as we know it, and yadda yadda yadda

It's so entertaining! That's why I started this thread, so we could repeat the last twenty threads that were identical to this one.

Some people may think my musical tastes are a bit strange, but SONIC is one of two stations in Edmonton that I listen to. I like the new music and find the station fresh and vibrant. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with THE BEAR. It sounds good. K-ROCK, on the other hand, is bland and dull. Bringing Terry Evans back has done nothing to improve it. The other local station I listen to, by the way, is CFCW, because I like all kinds of country music. These days, CFCW may keep K-Rock and CAPITAL FM afloat.

reading this "tired and dusty" stuff kinda makes me wonder.. how do you save a floundering classic rock station? isnt it in their nature to be tired and dusty? i mean you could say good personality and yadda yadda but if you get cutting edge personality doesnt that make for a disconnect with your core 50 something audience? and if you get some old timers dont they have the same message they had 20 years ago? anyone wanna weigh in?

Wondering why the format is floundering?

Pretty simple, people have been "shaking it all night long" every night for 28 years. Not to mention checking into the same hotel in California for 32 years, dreaming about their sweet home in Alabama for 34 years and climbing the same stairway to heaven for 37 years.

Just 'cause you're over 50 doesn't mean you don't like any music from after the year 2000.

Exactly.  The reason I hate Classic Rock Radio.  Try working on a Classic Rock Station, if I ever hear Aqua Lung again it will be too soon.

I totally agree. The thing these guys or other classic stations never seemed to get is Hotel isn't the only song the Eagles ever did. I could name 25 of their core bands that they only play 3 songs of. The Stones did how many albums? Bet I could name 3 of the last 4 Stones songs they played and I haven't listened to these guys in ages. If you're pulling from 25-30 years of music, there is no excuse to play the same song 3 times in a week. The Bear plays enough new stuff that they won't get tired. K-rock though.... I don't think the station can be saved. I think where they are right now is about as good as it will ever get for them and it will likely get worse.
