Just curious about the new stations in Fort Mac, has Harvard hired anybody yet? Anyone thoughts on how well they'll do?? Also, I've met a couple people who have worked out there and got a mixed reaction on the place. Is it really that dark/bad?
The thing about For Mac, is that it's EXPENSIVE to live out there if you're not making good money. The other down side, is that it's 4 hours to the next place (Edmonton). However, it will also only be what you make it. If you want it to suck, and you go in with a terrible attitude, then it's gonna suck. If you go in with a positive attitude, it'll be much better. Sounds cheezy, but it's true.
I was talking to the Standard station up there about three years ago...and the money they offered me wouldn't even have paid rent let alone my student loans and just surviving in general. When I asked how everyone else who worked there got by, they said everyone had a few roommates. I was engaged and my husband and I were not really into having "a few roommates". As a single girl I'm sure it would have been a blast, but I just wasn't in that place at the time.
I had a blast out there! Worked with a top notch team who were passionate and pros but still knew how to have a good time. A great experience, truly.
As far as single women in Fort Mac, I found it increasingly difficult to pick them up, mainly because I just didn't make the money that the trades guys did. Also, I was very skinny.
Working at a station in Fort McMurray is no different than anywhere else....here comes the but.... it IS VERY EXPENSIVE! One bedroom Apartments start at about 1600.00 to 1700.00 per month. If you add the damage deposit it can get pricey. Basement suites with one little cell can run you 800 bucks! With that said, if you want to be a part of the oil sands capital of the world it is definitely the place to be. Prices for food, clothing, dvds etc are about the same as anywhere else in Alberta. They have the big box stores Home Hardware, Walmart, Tim Hortons, burgers etc and loads of sports bars.
As others have stated, it is how you make it. If you like adventure then this could be it. NewCap and Harvard are now in the start up phase and Rogers, which took over OK Radio's Country and Rock stations, are already their too.
I heard Harvard is a good group and are hiring now according to Milkman.
