the new newcap station in bonnyville has begun testing.....it's at 101.3 fm....not sure of the radius or signal strength but it comes in loud and clear in cold lake, about 1/2 hour away......they are playing a mix of tunes - queen, gwen stefani, coldplay - it's very much like the 'fox' format they run in brooks and edson.....current fm signals in the area are the goat in lloyd with it's mix of classic rock and todays heavier stuff, k-rock in cold lake with it's classic rock and the aboriginal station....on the am side, it's st.paul with it's cat country signal and 790 cfcw with it's country format.....the signal from wayne fm in wainwright or key 83 in wainwright don't reach this area.....still to come is the cat country signal from new cap's lac la biche station...not sure when they'll begin testing or even if they're up and running.....i should have included the cbc am and fm are also available in the area
Part of me says yes...part of me says no...Newcap wants to crush them...but we need Independant Broadcasters to keep the large companies honest...Healthy Competition is good...but I am not sure if Newcap plays fair in the rural areas
I'm pretty comfortable in saying that the Goat won't be going anywhere anytime soon, and if they decide to sell, it'll be on their own terms. They still have a lot of cash going through that place...

a few years back, the goat and newcap were at the table and apparently only a million and change apart from newcap buying the goat.....the deal never did come off so newcap followed up with the big change at cksa ( now lloyd fm ), the move to setup the bonnyville station ( kool 101.3 ), wayne fm and the synergy between newcaps lloyd tv station and their north east alberta properties.....newcap also moved to squash the tardiff station in whitecourt.....word was goat management had something to do with that attempt to set up in whitecourt by tardiff.....despite all this, the goat remains strong in northeast alberta as their programming and community involvement are superior to other stations in the area.....
From what I've heard Newcap isn't going to be going into BBM's this fall...for any of their stations in the midwest or lakeland. Mind you...CKSA was the only station that was rated last fall. Take it for what it is worth.

in the past when ever the northeast was rated, newcap just assumed the section classed as 'others' was their stations - cat country, k-rock in cold lake etc......
ahhhh...yes....assuming....always a good way to judge how many people listen to the station...of course...we could have a great debate over how good BBM's are...lol Gotta love radio.
Don’t worry the Goat is alive and kicking in the northeast. The novelty of Kool 101.3 will wear off with only the morning show broadcasting live.
According to the Goat’s intervention to Kool’s broadcast application they stated that they have their application into the CRTC to split 99.7. If approved it will be interesting to see how Newcap reacts.
There is no question that the Goat has improved the quality of radio in northeast Alberta.
Rawlco tried way before Newcap tried. Standard screwed them on National Sales Reps. I say Pattison or Vista. CJVR Ltd. look to expand? Rogers is a long shot (Lloyd's market may be too small.)
I know a couple of people at the Goat and trust me the ratings are more than just "not bad". The station continues to make money hand over fist through hard work and actually spending money to make money. They are a quality operation, from their facility to the talent they seek out for that size of market. Go figure, a station that actually spends money to make money and an indie, no less. This is almost unheard of in Canadian radio. No wonder everyone is trying to get a piece of The Goat

As proof, just simply look at staff turn-over. I think Wayne in one year went through more people The Goat went through in five. Let's not add the resignations from Lloyd and KROCK Cold Lake; actions are speaking loudly. Not to mention The Goat's new expanded facilities. All thanks to the idea from Zimmerman, marketed by a great promotions/creative deptartment and Zakognick? who could sell it.
Newcap does well in a monopoly. Doesn't know how to win in with competition. That's why they either buy the competition out or make a deal to sell out:

Brilliant insight and I'm starting to believe quite true.
Unfortunately, with their new "Director of Programming, Newcap Radio" many don't see that changing - it's also funny that the guy before him got Vice President in his title and all this guy gets is Director. That speaks volumes about his actual talent. This new guy is more interested in his own personal agenda and power than any actual company success. The moment things get real rough, he'll take what he can and bail.
By that standard I'd say it's safe to say most Alberta towns don't have a local station. Reminds me...Dan [Sys] reported that CKWA in Slave Lake had gone from 1210 AM to 92.7 FM. I am told 1210 is still running with nothing but static on 92.7. And that application promised an afternoon drive guy was gonna be added, but I think the PM drive still comes out of WEM.
So, it's great to see local radio coming back to the Lakeland area. Now that Bonnyville has their own radio station and CHLW in St. Paul has added a new local afternoon person, plus word is they will leave the Cat Country radio network this year, I wonder whats in store for these two communities with radio stations much more focused on them.
If it is true that CHLW is leaving the Cat Country network, would this open the door for an application to convert to FM? It would make sense with CFCW and CHLW playing the same evening programming. As well as there is no country FM station in the Lakeland area.
