Longtime celebrity PD Alan Cross leaves his post month’s end at The Edge in Toronto (CFNY-FM) to assume a new post as Senior PD at Splice Media, working on the development of national content initiatives.

In an internal memo reporting on Cross’s transfer to Splice Media, the interactive arm of Corus Entertainment, division GM David Huszar announced: “Since its inception, the Interactive group at Corus radio has been dedicated to the growth of Corus radio audiences and revenue through the extension of our radio brands into new media platforms. The success our websites have shown in the past several years is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the radio interactive team.

We all know that the current brand-extension strategy we are executing is only a piece of the puzzle of growing Corus’s online business. We need to continue to innovate in order to fully realize the radio division’s potential as an integrated broadcast and online company.

“To that end I’m thrilled to announce that Alan Cross will be joining our team. Alan is a passionate devotee of all things interactive, an experienced and innovative program director, a prolific multimedia talent and arguably Corus radio’s premiere national radio personality as host of The Ongoing History of New Music. He’s also a dedicated techno-geek,so he should fit right in.”

No replacement for Cross at The Edge has been named as yet.

I would argue that Cross is Canada's only national famous (private) radio host.  More famous than Red ever was.  More famous than Jake or Larry and Willy.  More famous than any number of nameless afternoon drive jocks. Hope we don't lose the on-air stuff.  He gets it.

No slight, but I've never heard of him.  Perhaps you could share some of Alan's resume.

to be honest... anyone with Wikipedia could do On-Going.  So even *if* Alan Cross does not have the time to VT it... someone else could continue the show.

Totally disagree, Alan's delivery is second to none. And if you have heard anything he has ever done, you know it goes far beyond looking up bands on Wikipedia. Listen to some of his World Album Premiers, he is by far the best radio broadcaster in the country. Ongoing History is his baby, I can't imagine he will let it go....

to be honest...he probably wrote most of the Wikipedia entries.  He's been doing the Ongoing History for over ten years - well before Wiki.

Oh - and no offense meant by the afternoon drive comment - it's just rare that a radio person carves such a unique niche.

not denying the brand is awesome... that is WHY I think, he could move on and someone else (a GOOD someone) could step in and do the show without missing a beat.

I listen to his show every week.  I am also a music nerd... sometimes I think the show could dive a little deeper, but then, he'd alienate the meat and potato rockers that make up the audience of the rock stations that carry him.

I think it would be way to tough to find someone to replace him on the on going history.  Do you get someone who's similar to him and run the risk of him being labelled a "rip off" do you go for a name instead?  But other than Strombo who else in Canada really has the credibility nation wide?

Also, Cross is not just a wikipedia reading know it all... The rumor is, when The Edge switched from vinyl to cd and then CD to computers (or however they went about it) Alan took all of the old albums and CDs and stored them in his basement.  Legend has it there's a room in Cross's house that still stores these records to this day.  Ofcourse you can only get to it by taking the correct monet off the wall and hitting a little red button which opens up a secret passage that is only lit by torch.
