NewCap (Edmonton) is in trouble.  I wonder what changes they might make in the next few months?

The Sonic numbers are outstanding, especially considering how hard it is to get BBM results from that demo in the first place.

CISN also dropped a lot.  I wonder if it has anything to do with Ian Sterling not being on air in the mid-days?

Expect a major on air change at Newcap.  Danny Hooper maybe going bye bye.

I think Danny Hooper is one of the reasons CFCW's ratings have dropped so much. He just doesn't fit that station in the morning. Sharon Mallon is okay, but she's no Jackie Rae. CFCW did very well with Jackie Rae and Wes Montgomery, then Graham Neil after Wes died. Now they're really hurting, although I believe they're up over the last survey. Newcap also has serious problems with Big Earl and its country format, and Krock has probably its worst ratings ever, but its become a "Crock".

There are a bunch of other reasons why.  The format is dying overall; look at CISN drop.  CFCW is on AM and farmers are buying equipment with FM receivers now.  Plus having forced that Whitecourt FM station to go country probably stole Woodlands/Sturgeon/Barhead/Westock listeners away...Not to mention the Gospel Country station in Wetaskiwin getting a power boost.  Don't forget Jackie Rae and Wes M. did dip the station to the 6.X at some point if I remember right.

Many blamed Mise for the start of the slide at NewCap Edmonton.  Agree or disagree, some of the decisions under his stewardship aided the current woes at WEM, but it appears the problems may be wider.

He was let go and still the slide continues.

Does anyone 'inside' have any thoughts as to why?

I'm only curious about K-ROCK and EARL and not interested in the AM country/ag work horse that is CFCW.  It makes money with or without ratings, so who cares.  City numbers don't pay the bills for the mighty CW, it's rural baby!

Here's the quotes from some managers as compiled by the Edmonton Journal....

CISN, K-Rock losing listeners

Sandra Sperounes, edmontonjournal.com

Published: Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Country powerhouse CISN 103.9 FM is slowly losing its grip on local radio listeners while classic-rock outlet, K-Rock 97.3 FM, seems to be fading faster than Motley Crue's career.
CISN, which was ranked number two last year, is now fourth, according to the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement's spring radio ratings.
The station attracted an 8.9 share of the market — down from 9.8 from last fall.
A share is based on the number of people who tune in and the length of time they listen.
Talk station, CHED, is still in top spot, with a 11.9 share. That's an
increase of 0.4.
The greatest gainers are Joe 92.5 FM, which plays a mix of pop-rock hits and oldies, and two outlets owned by Standard Radio — EZ-Rock 104.9 FM and The Bear 100.3 FM.
All boosted their listenership by more than a full share point.
The Bear is now in second place in the ratings with a 9.3 share, making it the most popular rock station in Edmonton.
Standard Radio's general manager and vice-president, Marty Forbes, says his stations were able to better adapt to the recent influx of new frequencies, such as modern-rock outlet, Sonic 102.9 FM and Magic 99.3 FM.
"We tried to stay focus on the entire product, not stunting or trying to advertise your way into success," he says.
"It doesn't work. It all comes down to what's between those two speakers."
Overall, eight stations boosted their numbers from last fall, including Sonic, CBC Radio's two frequencies, and country station CFCW 790 AM.
Five outlets saw their numbers drop, while two, The Bounce and Cool 880, held steady.
The biggest losers were K-Rock, Magic and CISN.
K-Rock fell from a 7.3 share to a 4.7 — it's worst showing in years. The classic-rock station, which is owned by Newcap, hasn't recovered from losing its morning show host, Terry Evans, last summer.
Newcap's country outlet, Big Earl 96.3 FM, lost listeners, too — dropping from a 3.7 share to a 2.8.
The general manager of both stations, Randy Lemay, isn't about to panic. He believes in his products. He says Big Earl gained more female listeners and its morning show also boasted an increase. As for K-Rock, he thinks the ratings are just an anomaly.
"The market is in a real tizzy, it's messed up with all the new entrants," he says.
"We found it a little strange that K-Rock dropped so much. We lost the lower demo of males — from 18 to 24 (years) and 25 to 34. This is too much of a loss that we have to discount it. We know our product is really good, we love our music, we love our direction, we've got research telling us we're on the right track."
The city's new jazz, pop and soft rock outlet, Magic, also faltered. It went from a 4.1 share to a 2.8, its lowest rating since launching in
December 2005.
The spring ratings were compiled between Jan. 8 and March 4, using surveys
completed by 1,916 listeners aged 12 and over.

K-ROCK SQUISHED

Radio has this evil finger of fate.

With every ratings report, it looks around, and with next to no warning squishes some poor innocent radio station, squirts away half its listenership.

The fickle finger spreads the pain.

Last fall, the finger squished CFCW, with a 50% drop in (Greater Edmonton) listeners.

With the new spring 2007 ratings book out, CFCW has made a nice recovery.

Now it's K-Rock's turn.

K-Rock has gone into a death spiral. Once always in the top four stations, it has fallen to ninth place. From fourth two years ago to seventh last year ... to ninth. OUCH.

Wha' happened? Heard Stairway to Heaven once too often? Was Terry Evans's departure too noticeable? Too many comedians on the morning show (three)? Heck, I like the K-Rock morning show. It's funny!

Where did the K-Rock army go? Well, The Bear had its best ratings in five years. Joe-FM, arguably the "new" classic-rock station, did some smart personnel shuffling and has great numbers.

Other ongoing radio stories: Newcap Radio poured energy and effort into Big Earl, but it's just not making headway against country FM giant CISN, with three times the listeners.

Nobody gives CHED much credit, but it's ruled Edmonton's airwaves since adopting the news, talk and sports format around 1993.

CBC-AM has its best ratings in years - good to see Edmontonians discovering the excellent ALL-LOCAL morning and afternoon talk/news shows.

Magic 99 is disappointed with a ratings dip ... but the new station is making a dent in the public consciousness.

Given the competition, Sonic (aimed at guys 18 to 25) and Bounce (kids 12 to 21) must be pleased. Both have carved out healthy niches and continue to grow.

* The spring '07 Bureau of Broadcast Measurement ratings - the number is a percentage of the total Edmonton listeners and hours listened. In brackets is the station's rating a year ago.
1. CHED 11.9 (11.7);
2. The Bear 9.3 (8.7);
3. Joe-FM 9.1 (7.0);
4. CISN-FM 8.9 (10.5);
5. EZ Rock 8.0 (7.0);
6. CBC-AM 6.9 (5.4)
7.  Sonic-FM 6.9 (6.1);
8. CFCW 6.7 (8.2);
9. K-Rock 4.7 (6.2);
10. Cool 880 3.6 (3.2);
11. Magic 99 2.8 (2.9),
12.  CBC-FM 2.8 (2.9)
13.  Big Earl 2.8 (2.7);
14. The Team 1260 0.9 (1.3).

Stations not listed do not subscribe to the BBM service.
