A new diversified rock station could soon be spinning tunes on the local airwaves.
The CRTC today announced the approval of Radio CJVR for an FM broadcasting licence to serve the Chilliwack market.
"Having considered all of the applications in light of the criteria set out above, the Commission finds that the overall proposal by Radio CJVR Ltd. (Radio CJVR) best meets the needs of the Chilliwack radio market," reads part of the CRTC decision. "In the Commission’s view, the proposal by Radio CJVR would augment the diversity of radio voices in the Chilliwack radio market and would add to the news voices in that market.
Radio CJVR presented "a viable business plan," for a "diversified rock music station" according to the CRTC decision. It also suggested the CJVR application "would increase competition in the Chilliwack radio market" without having an unreasonably negative impact on the existing market.
The commission noted that Chilliwack had fewer radio stations per capita than other Canadian cities of a similar size, coupled with strong growth potential.
"Based on the evidence set out above, the Commission is satisfied that the Chilliwack radio market could support the licensing of one new commercial radio station without experiencing any undue negative impact," reads the decision.
The remaining applications submitted last winter to the CRTC for a Chilliwack radio station were denied.
The new rock station from Radio CJVR will be at 89.5 on the FM dial.
it's nice to see someone ELSE penetrate the market to break up the Rogers monopoly...although referring to CLEAR-FM as a Chilliwack station is a joke. Alternative Rock for a format...would this be another attempt at an X-FM? We know how that experiment went. Anybody remember the XFM launch New Year's Eve heading into the Millenium? Didn't THINK so.
Will the new station make a big difference to the average Chilliwackian? Unless they're a Chilliwack Bruins fan, probably not.
They got it, and hold a $954,000 over 7 CTD plus 40% Cancon. We may see some buyer remorse when they are in year 4 of that commitment
It is great to see a smaller outfit get a license, but they bought it. Newcap was next down the list with a $700,000 over 7 CTD.
The commitment vs. revenue potential for a start up is going to sting. Nothing like tapping a line a credit to pay FACTOR. And at 380 watts, nothing there beyond Chilliwack.
I have to admit i'm surprised that Golden West did'nt get. They had ( if I'm not mistaken) the backing of the Chilliwack Bruins, plus many Chilliwack business people who said they would support it. Cant help but wonder if Bill Coombs becoming involved hurt their chances, as it was he who sold the CRTC in 1997 to allow the original Star FM to move their towers and signals to "better service" the Langley, Surrey area. Many Vancouver stations smelled a rat, filed interventions claiming it was a move to have a new Vancouver signal. At the hearings , Mr Bill denied those claims, said the "Big Boys" were paranoid and that that being a Vancouver station was " of zero interest to him and the shareholders of Fraser Valley Radio". He got approved, then proceeded to hire Rick Honey, Kerry Grace and launch a large campaign in Vancouver for the "New Star of Vancouver". As history shows, it was a complete disaster that almost bankrupted FVB, and within 24 months saw Coombs selling it all to Rogers. This time ,anyway, the CRTC looked at Bill , hummed a few bars of "Wont get Fooled Again" by the Who and said "denied"
We'll also see if the winning applicant decides to bring back the CHWK calls for the new station.
They probably will if they go with ol' CBC programming. The Hawk? As little girls say, "OMG." I hope not. If they pull a XL103, out of spite over non-originality, I'll ignore them if I get a ratings brochure.
