Application by Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Ltd. (the general partner) and Jim Pattison Industries Ltd. (the limited partner), carrying on business as Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Limited Partnership, for a broadcasting licence to operate a new commercial FM station in Vancouver.
Already this sounds very much Jim Pattison "Staff will be encouraged to walk, cycle or use transit to work" On his proposed wages, who could afford to drive.
As understand it, CKBD (AM 600) is being flipped to 100.5 as The Peak.
The Commission gave Pattison the 100.5 spot because any adjacent channel interference problems with 100.3 the Q in Victoria (also a Pattison station) will be kept "in house."
D'ya suppose the end of AM600 will also end Dave McCormick's career? Or will he be handed a spot at JR Country?
"as well as the application by Matthew Gordon McBride, on behalf of a corporation to"
wooooooo....... is that Matt McBride ex of 97 KISS FM back in the 90s? He did the Saturday Night Dance Party back then! Same Matthew? Graduate of BCIT?
He later went to Z 95 did he not?
Fascinating. Absolutely fascinating. And I thought a Retractable Roof on BC Place was a big deal...
Hahahahahaha.... The Peak!!! OK, this is the EXACT LOGO that Corus had for 107.3 The Peak in Calgary before they flipped to Q107 a few years back.
This will make a nice assortment in their basket - much like their brand "The River" in Prince George. Coincidence that their is a "River" in both Kamloops and Lethbridge owned by other companies who kicked their butts for years?
Yup, good to see the CRTC is granting applications to those who bring original ideas to radio, LOL!!!
Already this sounds very much Jim Pattison "Staff will be encouraged to walk, cycle or use transit to work" On his proposed wages, who could afford to drive.
Not sure if it's true or not, but that is some funny stuff.
Based on all of the foregoing, the Commission approves the applications by the two parties listed below for broadcasting licences to operate new English-language commercial FM radio programming undertakings in Vancouver. Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Ltd. (the general partner) and Jim Pattison Industries Ltd. (the limited partner), carrying on business as Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Limited Partnership Application 2007-1451-0, received 9 October 2007
6851916 Canada Inc. Application 2007-1428-9, received 9 October 2007
The Commission also approves the following application for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language commercial FM radio programming undertaking in Port Moody. Matthew Gordon McBride, on behalf of a corporation to be incorporated Application 2007-0988-4, received 9 July 2007
After reading the rest of what the CRTC had to say...it seems like all three stations are going with the Triple A format. Won't that be a bit hard on everybody? I wish them all the best. But really?....all triple A's? What was the CRTC thinking?
I know Matthew and I know of Pattison...anyone have details on the third? Where are they from, who are they etc...I have a lovely cheese and cracker platter I would like to send them...in case this 95Crave thing doesn't work out for me
Already this sounds very much Jim Pattison "Staff will be encouraged to walk, cycle or use transit to work" On his proposed wages, who could afford to drive.
Well, if they can, I'm sure he can tell them where to get a car.
Agent gets licence for new FM station in Vancouver by MARSHA LEDERMAN Globe & Mail May 31, 2008 VANCOUVER -- After years of getting his big-name acts played on the radio, music impresario Sam Feldman (pictured) is getting into the business directly. The long-time Vancouver-based music manager and agent (Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Joni Mitchell) has been granted a licence to launch a new commercial radio station in Vancouver.
The station at 104.1 FM will operate a format known as Triple A (Adult Alternative Album) with an emphasis on new music (half of its play list will have been released within the past two years) and emerging artists (at least 15 per cent of the weekly play list will be devoted to emerging artists, according to the application). The new station will also devote 15 per cent of its play list to so-called special interest music, including roots, folk, jazz, blues and world music.
Approval was granted yesterday by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
Mr. Feldman's partners in the venture include another radio newcomer, David Aisenstat (restaurateur whose properties include The Keg) and veteran radio programmers Bob Mackowycz and Roy Hennessy. TSN personality Michael Landsberg is also involved. The ownership group, tentatively calling itself Shore FM, plans to launch the station in the first half of 2009.
Meanwhile, the migration away from the AM dial continues in Vancouver, as CBC Radio One's signal will move to FM. As part of yesterday's decision, the CRTC said the CBC can move to 88.1 FM but also maintain its 690 AM signal to reach a wide geographic area.
In another switch, the easy listening format commercial station 600 AM (CKBD), operated by the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Ltd., will go off the air and be replaced by a new FM station at 100.5 FM. The new station, to be launched in late fall, will also take on the Triple A format, with a focus on new and emerging music.
The CBC's request to operate an FM transmitter on Gabriola Island was denied, as was its request to operate an FM transmitter in Nanaimo.
That logo looks more like easy listening than alt. Oye. Why can't they TRY to get a little local? Call it the "Burrard" or something, I don't care. Anything other than what we hear in EVER other place.
When CKBD leaves 600AM do you think the frequency will go silent, or will an existing AM up the dial jump at the channel?
And...
Does anyone think the standards/easy listening format will be picked up by another Vancouver AM station? Seems to me a pitty that 730AM does nothing but traffic.
Like we really need another station that plays the same music as all the others. Hopefully this one will have little or no talk or entertaining as they call it!
So the two new FM signals that have been granted are almost identical. Very interesting. How are the CRTC held accountable, and by whom? It's interesting how radio has become all about telling the CRTC what they want to hear in the application process and then doing your own thing after that. The CRTC is a bigger waste than ever right now due to how they handle this entire condition in Canadian radio.

Tough position for the CRTC on this one though - granting a true independant is part of the CRTC's mandate for diversity in ownership - so they look good. PLUS, apparently Pattison is the only one who could use the frequency they were granted because of the closeness to their Q frequency in Vic.
Most importantly, Pattison came to the table WITH 12 FREAKIN' MILLION in Canadian Talent Development, while Sam's group was second most of all the applicants with $7 million (tied with Newcap). That's 19 million towards developing new artists (in theory anyways). Pretty tough to overlook.

So the 19 mill these two companies offered up, what does that do for the public? The listening audience? Is that not the CRTC's job, to ensure the public is represented?
Is that not the CRTC's job, to ensure the public is represented?
Hahahaha...that's rich! Oh Yeah you should do stand up. If the CRTC cared anything about the "public" they wouldn't be making stations play all the CANCON crap they have to play...that only really serves the artists who aren't even listening to the stations that are being forced to play their crap.
Hahahahahaha.... The Peak!!! OK, this is the EXACT LOGO that Corus had for 107.3 The Peak in Calgary before they flipped to Q107 a few years back.
It's also the same logo used by CJAV-FM in Port Alberni.

I sure hope it does, because it'd be a shame to see a great format be let go to waste, and to see its target audience go unrepresented. Maybe AM730 should dump "all traffic, all the time" and pick up the standards/EZ format.
The Peak plans all playing artists such as. KT Tunstall, John Mayer, Arcade Fire, David Gray, Feist and Jack Johnson. They claim local and regional artist will get aired. With 12 million in Canadian Content Development funding over the next 7 years
Triple A format targeting Adults 25-49 years of age.
CRTC okays three new metro FM stations Bruce Constantineau Vancouver Sun Published: Tuesday, June 03, 2008
Metro Vancouver radio listeners will soon hear three new FM radio stations -- all featuring variations of the emerging adult album alternative (Triple A) format.
CRTC approvals will allow the Jim Pattison Group to broadcast a new station at 100.5 MHz, replacing its AM station CKBD 600 AM. The new station will be known as 100.5 The PEAK, with a Triple A format featuring artists like John Mayer, David Gray, Arcade Fire and Jack Johnson. It will be the Pattison Group's second Vancouver FM station, as it currently operates country music station JR FM. Pattison Broadcast Group vice-president Gerry Siemens expects the new station will begin broadcasting by the late fall. He said it has become increasingly difficult to make a profit on AM radio.
"The demographics that still subscribe to AM are getting on in years and it's a difficult audience to sell to advertisers," Siemens said in an interview. "We've had reasonable success with 600 AM but there's no doubt in our mind that the future is in serving a younger audience on FM."
The station's Triple A format will target listeners between 25 and 49, skewing slightly towards women. Siemens said the format is relatively new in Canada but extremely popular in the U.S., especially on the West Coast.
A new independent radio group -- including Vancouver music agent Sam Feldman and restaurateur David Aisenstat -- will operate a new station at 104.1 MHz, with a Triple A format targeting adults between the ages of 25 and 54.
Matthew Gordon McBride has also received CRTC approval to operate a new station in Port Moody at 98.7 MHz with a music mix featuring contemporary pop, world beat and jazz. The station will be available to listeners in the Tri-Cities area of Port Moody, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, with a combined population of about 270,000. McBride currently operates radio stations in small B.C. communities like Pemberton, Tofino and Ucluelet.
The CRTC defines the Triple A format as a broad mix of musical genres that can include pop, rock and acoustic-based music. It offers a larger weekly music playlist than current mainstream formats, with fewer repeats and less emphasis on chart-driven hit music. The Pattison Group's new station will play 60 per cent new music (released within the last two years) and 40 per cent from the 1980s, 1990s and the early years of the 2000s. The Feldman-Aisenstat station will feature 50 per cent new music and lesser known musical selections of well-known artists.
The CRTC said the Vancouver radio market generated more than $131 million in advertising revenues last year.
The Peak plans all playing artists such as. KT Tunstall, John Mayer, Arcade Fire, David Gray, Feist and Jack Johnson. They claim local and regional artist will get aired. With 12 million in Canadian Content Development funding over the next 7 years
Make no mistake cats and kiddies - this is what it NOW comes down to. Sam Feldman's group offered up 7 mill over 7 years (second most tied with Newcap). That's a 19 million dollar infusion to the development of Canadian talent... too much for the CRTC to pass up. CJVR committed to 1M for Chilliwack which is huge for a smaller market (by far and away the most of any applicant).
Watch Edmonton, CHUM put up a 10 million commitment, I think Pattison came up with ANOTHER 7 million to try to get their stick.
