It's with regret that I announce Julie Nolin will not be part of CHEK NEWS when we begin the new broadcast season in the fall. For family reasons, Julie has decided to return to Vancouver. Julie and her husband Craig, have been maintaining two households since Craig was hired by a Vancouver firm last year. The arrangement, understandably, is not sustainable long term. So Julie and the boys will move back to the mainland before the start of the next school year. Julie will continue in her current anchor role until sometime in August.
I would like to thank Julie for her contributions. In two short seasons, Julie helped us successfully rebrand CHEK News. She was instantly accepted by viewers and helped ensure our newscast was number one on Vancouver Island.
Staying number one will be key as we formulate how we handle Julie's departure over the next month or two.
Thanks,
Rob Germain News Director CHEK NEWS Vancouver Island (250) 480-3766 1 866 639-7241
While they're at it how about sayin' so long to Jennifer Crosby? Sorry, she seems like a nice kid but...that's just the point. No cred. Way too "[i]Twin ky"?is that a word?
Hi there... I thought I should add a few things to this thread.
First off, this was an extremely difficult decision. As Rob's note said, this was not sustainable... I could have signed a long-term contract like the company wanted -- and needed promotionally. But how, in good faith, could I have done that? My husband's career is taking off just two years out of animation school as a storyboarder -- and his career is thriving in Vancouver, not Victoria, unfortunately for me.
Was I pushed? Absoloutely not. I have been treated very well.
As far as endearing myself to my colleagues, I cannot speak for them. But, what I know is this: they have been wonderful to work with. From the newsroom to control room staff -- to being able to work on-air with a true professional like Ed Bain -- my time here has been extremely worthwhile, and it was/is a valuable learning experience.
And, one more note: Jennifer Crosby has "got it goin' on" journalistically. I know what it's like not to be taken seriously, and let me say this... you need to take her seriously... she knows her stuff.
Julie, thanks for posting. Victoria's loss, etc etc ...
Now to the real job ahead of us ... who can we recommend to succeed her? Red hot radio type whose good looks are being wasted? Secondary market champ who would like to live in Canada's best climate? (Well, at least until this "spring"........)
Well , I certainly enjoyed watching Julie, and wish her well in her future. As far as a replacement, I would like to see Phil Hendrie, or Reverend Al Sharpton get the gig. I would certainly tune in every night if either were selected.
Very nice post Julie. It is sad that there are so many tools on these nameless/faceless message boards but I guess that is life in the cyber world. All the best in Vancouver.
Having been around the broadcast biz for more than two weeks, Swamp's question was a valid one. All too often the departure is labelled by those in power as a 'mutual decision' when the employee had no thought of leaving until management brought it up. Most performers prefer to NOT be where they're not wanted, and a firing doesn't look that great on a resume, so they go relatively gracefully, Julie convinced all of us this was not the case here, but you can't necessarily tell from the bosses' memo to staff, or a finely crafted press release.

I agree, very nice post Julie, and please, my question wasn't a matter of trying to place 'innuendo into the mix', but rather to have the question answered quickly and in a timely matter. I thank you Julie for jumping to the 'gun of opinion' and making clarification. Just for the record, once I read the memo, I reserved opinion until I told a close colleque and his immediate reply was "she's being pushed!" It was at that point in time I realized the question had to be asked. I have nothing to apologize for asking the question, besides, with recent history of lay-offs and now announced lay-offs because of downsizing, yes, bottom line is dollars, not really Cents though, especially when we're dealing with devote loyal employees who've been with the company, some up to three decades or possibly more. Putting a human face on the job is probably what we need to see, yet downsizing is a reality in this fast paced world we live. You know what I would love to see, is the almagamation of the CHEKERS put their own company together and make a bid to take over the news coverage from Victoria and the Island... make it a bidding process. Is that possible? ..... comments please...
that's an A&W "Swamp Water" = 1/2 root beer/1/2 orange
