Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

Puget Sound Radio recently got word from Steve Olson of Sait with news of the successful candidate for the position of Instructor which was advertised here on PSR in October of 2011..

Congratulations goes out to Alan Beesley who secured the 'prized' position at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology's Broadcast department.  Beesley's been kicking around the Calgary area since 1987 at stations such as CJAY 92, JACK FM, and Mix 97.7.  Prior to that he was on air at a station in BC.  Steve tells us Alan has fit in very nicely, and the response from students and co-workers has been tremendous!

The Institute had a total of 54 applications.  Their first committee went through the resumes and narrowed the list of the “qualified” applicants.  By meaning qualified, able to work in Canada, with at least 10 years of direct and compatible industry experience.  When they finished, there were 45 applicants to choose from.  Another committee then went through the list of qualified applicants, extracting to a rank order of the top 10.  A third committee then interviewed and ended up with five candidates for the elevated and closing interviews.

Steve told us, not only was he blown away by the response, he said it was great to see that many people interested in what we do here at Sait.

SAIT Polytechnic’s School of Information and Communications Technologies is currently seeking an Instructor for the Radio, Television, and Broadcast News (RTBN) Radio major diploma. The skill sets for this role will require extensive knowledge radio, particularly in relation to on-air announcing, music directing, programming, and industry trends.

The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert in Radio with a strong understanding of programming philosophy, and will contribute to the ongoing curriculum development and delivery of this program. Through a collaborative process with the Academic Chair as well as other instructors in the program, the successful candidate will utilize knowledge, skills and strengths developed in the industry to deliver relevant material, and contribute to the ongoing improvements and maintenance of each course.

Courses that fall under this portfolio may include, but are not limited to, on-air, speech, business of radio, music directing, on-air delivery for television, assisting in dramatic stage productions, web-based delivery, leadership, and writing for media. As a result, the successful candidate will demonstrate a wide-range of broadcast related skills, with a heavy emphasis on radio broadcasting.


RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare and present lessons, lectures, assignments and lab demonstrations for learners in accordance with SAIT standards.
• Work collaboratively as part of a team including industry and educational experts to ensure that curriculum is taught accurately and completely to the required standard.
• Create or update course content, learning activities and assessments to meet learning outcomes for the specified course outline(s).
• Manage the classroom to ensure a positive learning environment.
• Administer lab assignments and hands-on lab exams as required.
• Maintain competent records for the purposes of grading, assessing professionalism and tracking attendance in both theory and lab classes.


QUALIFICATIONS

• Relevant post-secondary education or certifications and a minimum of ten-years of direct radio broadcast experience.  
• Significant and recent experience in on-air announcing is necessary.  The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of multi-formats, demographics, and day-parts.
• Recent and relevant commercial voice-over experience.
• Experience as a Master of Ceremonies.
• A good understanding of event planning and promotions.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and in particular Excel is an asset.
• Strong knowledge of industry trends is important.
• On-line expertise in different platforms is recommended.
• Practical experience with on-air automation systems, music scheduling software, and so on.
• Excellent communication skills; the ability to organize and present written information.
• Able to work independently but take direction when necessary.
• Strong commitment to delivering high-quality instruction within set deadlines.
• Previous teaching experience in a post-secondary environment with an understanding of adult learning, training, and education is an asset.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
