Victoria's staff-owned TV station, CHEK 6 ran 'ABC's Nightline' for the first time last night, Monday Aug. 30 at 11.35 pm, and we understand 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' will be running at 12:05 am as early as tonight, or for sure by Wednesday night. (early Thursday).

These both become sim-sub shows, run simultaneously with their KOMO scheduling, meaning CHEK advertising during that 90 minute period will be viewed by all the cable viewers in southwestern BC tuned to the American channel.

The Canadian commercials will not be inserted on KOMO's High Def feed (channel 200 in Shaw Cable areas) because CHEK does not yet supply an HD signal.

BC Radio Station owner faces gun charges

Radio station owner faces five firearms
charges after shooting

By Kim Bolan,
Vancouver Sun
August 31, 2010

Radio station managing director Maninder Gill

Radio India managing director Maninder Gill made a brief appearance in Surrey Provincial Court Monday on a series of charges related to a weekend shooting that left a rival in hospital.

The high-profile owner of the popular Punjabi radio station is facing five firearms counts for allegedly shooting Surrey contractor Harjit Singh Atwal in the parking lot of the Guru Nanak temple on 120th Street on Saturday.

Gill, 47, looked relaxed but solemn during his short appearance in courtroom 101, along with his defence lawyer, Richard Peck.

Surrey RCMP media officer Const. Peter Neily confirmed Monday that Gill turned himself in after police issued a warrant for his arrest.

Gill, who has no criminal record, has been charged with two counts of discharging a firearm with intent and one each of pointing a firearm, possession of a firearm for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Atwal, 54, remained in hospital Monday recovering from a single gunshot wound to the thigh.

The shooting took place about 12:45 Saturday after the men started arguing at a wedding.

The men had been feuding for weeks. Atwal, an associate named Jaspal Atwal (no relation) and a third man named Harkirat Kular filed a civil suit against Gill, Radio India and several of its journalists Aug. 3 in relation to broadcasts in May they said were untrue and defamatory.

In addition, Gill and Radio India host Sukhminder Singh Cheema have filed complaints with the RCMP over the last three months, claiming they have been threatened.

Neily said investigators quickly identified their suspect based on witness accounts at the wedding, which was attended by close to 1,000 people.

"An intensive investigation was undertaken in the hours following the incident," Neily said. "Investigators from the Surrey RCMP forwarded a request to Crown counsel for charges and an arrest warrant was issued for the arrest of the suspect."

Neily said that he wouldn't provide additional details because the case is now before the courts.

He did say, however, "this shooting was not a random incident. The involved parties were known to each other."

Gill is due back in court Wednesday for a bail hearing.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said it is unfortunate that a dispute appears to have escalated to violence. "I hope that cooler heads prevail. Violence is never the answer to resolve any issue. As it moves forward, all the details of what has occurred will come out in due course," she said Monday.

She said she was briefed on the shooting by Surrey RCMP.

Radio India journalist Gurpreet Singh said it is difficult for everybody at the station.

"We normally cover the news, and today we are the subject of it. It is very difficult for us. These are trying times," Singh said.

He said Gill glanced at his staff members during his court appearance, but did not gesture. Atwal's supporters were also in the courtroom.

"We are trying to be objective as we can," Singh said. "It is like tightrope walking."

kbolan@vancouversun.com

Read more: http://www.vancouversun.com/ne.....y.html#ixzz0yIJn4Ono

Institute of Technology's radio broadcasting program, Kaye has gained valuable experience at 100.3 The Q working the shifts that nobody else wants -- Saturday and Sunday evenings, plus two weekday overnight shifts.

"A lot of people end up going to Fort St.-something, cut your teeth for a while, and move back to a bigger town," said the 24-year-old Kaye, a self-described music buff. "I didn't have to move -- the overnight has been great."

The Q is a rarity in radio, the only station in Victoria with a live DJ in studio all night. Kaye starts preparations for his show at 11 p.m. and goes on air at midnight until the Q's morning show starts at 6 a.m.

Armed with a Tim Hortons coffee, Kaye sits in front of a large eggplant-coloured counter faced with a soundboard covered with knobs and bright plastic buttons. He is constantly multi-tasking, swivelling in his chair to tweak the night's playlist, research news on his laptop about the bands he's playing, field calls from listeners and provide commentary about the songs he plays.

Although the station's music director sets Kaye's playlist of modern and classic rock tunes, the night shift offers less scrutiny.

"You have a lot more freedom on the overnights," said Kaye, who on this night decides to sneak in one of his favourite Soundgarden tracks while cutting some Nickelback and Everclear to make room for a little more commentary.

"You can experiment and screw up in the middle of the night."

Kaye works alone in the brightly lit studio overlooking Quadra Street. But he stays connected to the outside world through his callers, many of whom are regulars. He gets his share of drunks and crazies phoning in, but most are hard-working night labourers like himself.

"The world doesn't stop at 6 p.m., despite what a lot of people think," Kaye said. "Stuff happens and people need to know about things in the middle of the night. Our listeners aren't asleep -- why should we be?"

It's the All night show on The Q
with Shayne Kaye
http://www.theq.fm/

http://www.timescolonist.com/Shayne+Kaye+Radio+disc+jockey/3456895/story.html#ixzz0y6XMgLx4
