From "MilkmanUnlimited":
Quoted Text
Newcap Edmonton GM Randy Lemay announced today that after a 26-year career, K-Rock(CIRK) Morning Show Host/PD Terry Evans has decided to retire from the business. Joining the K-Rock morning show shortly will be Edmonton's "Jungle" Jim Jerome, most recently part of the morning show at CHUM Ottawa's Team 1200.

Will Steve Zimmerman take over as ring leader or will "Jungle Jim" be the quarterback?
This is going to be confusing, after all, Jungle Jay Hamilton is a well known Edmonton radio icon from the glory days of 630 CHED when it was a CHR station. Last I heard he's still in the market running a broadcasting school in Edmonton.

It cannot be more than a year since Jungle Jay was doing vacation fill on Cool 8-80.

Terry, you have my respect and the market place is worse off with your departure.
No one is going to employ Jungle Jay Hamilton. Too much baggage.
Once Terry is finally out of the building, will somebody please ask him what his honest opinion of the current "Director of Programming" for NewCap is?
Also ask him if this person's way of running NewCap Edmonton into the ground moral-wise (and ratings wise) played any part in his decision to "retire".
All the best Terry.

Could Terry be going to the Cayman Islands?
Posted by: sirknegah, July 8, 2006, 4:08pm; Reply: 5
Terry has always had a giant horse shoe up his rear end. Maybe he won the lottery and can do what ever the heck he wants now. Snorkle in the Caymans, ski at Aspen.

Terry is going to Cay Rock in the Caymans to work for old buddy Steve Jones.

Probably means "morale-wise" although there might be some morals to be learned.

Yes I meant "morale-wise" did. Opps! Typo on my part.
With the brief passing conversations I have had with people under the employ of NewCap Edmonton, "things" haven't exactly been rosey since the move to WEM.
But, again, rumours, so who knows, right?

And Terry didn't jump, he was pushed. Sounds like a very UGLY place to work there at Newcap Edmonton.

Perhaps it's Humble going to the Caymans?

Anyone with any ounce of integrity - or passion for radio will be "assimilated by Newcap" or they will leave.

Well it didn't take long to fill the pd shoes (size 13 I believe) left behind by Terry Evans departure from K rock. Milky reports that Locklin Cross, one time p.m drive in Prince Goerge and currently at power 97 in Winnipeg takes over.
I have big questions about the chemistry of the new attempt at morning show...Jim jerome, Steve Zimmerman and Bill Cowan--3 funnymen sidekicks. What the.....? Keep Steve...boot the rest and find a really good straight guy/host. New consultant...new p.d.--scary times ahead for that building. Man, things never stay the same in the biz for long.
And who's gonna spill the beans on the real reason Terry was pushed?

****BigE has had second thoughts about unfounded domestic allegations he posted here ..and asked that they be removed.
Several replies taking issue with him have also been taken down, since without the initial post they would make no sense, ******

Terry wasn't fired. He retired after 26 years in Radio.
My friends who know Terry all speak of his integrity, so I find it hard to believe his "wanting to spend more time with the family" reasons meant dumping his family, etc.
If I'm wrong about all this, he sure has managed to fool a lot of people for a very long time. Seems like a lot of effort, especially in his many charitable efforts.
Admittedly, he may be due for a Mid-Life Crisis, but it just seems too out of character.

Sorry to see Terry go. Good luck Terry and thanks.
I was talking to Irene, receptionist for NewCap Edmonton in West Edmonton Mall, and she was also saying that he retired. Looks like Jungle Jim will be joining the morning show. Best of luck to ya!
I hope Steve and Bill stay on as they seem to do well together. They make me laugh. Can't wait to see what the future holds for K-Rock.
Posted by: Barry Casson, August 31, 2006, 8:42pm; Reply: 18
Well that settles it. If the receptionist said it, it must be true, lol.
Just funnin' you, Maxstout.
Whatever Terry's reason, the fact that there is turmoil at Newcap isn't anything new. Just seems too bad that a company with that many holdings in Edmonton can only seem to make a go of it with one station (CFCW). And even at that, CFCW has always been a rock throughout.
BTW, I heard Terry went to go drive truck for a living. I kid you not.
Posted by: maxstout, August 31, 2006, 11:33pm; Reply: 19
Hmmm, went to drive truck ehh?
Sometimes a total career change is what a person needs. I've had to do it, corporate lay-off 4 years ago. Still looking for what I really want to do.
And I'm sure that Irene (receptionist) was briefed on what not to say if some nosy Ned came along asking, "What happened to Terry?"
I just hope that there is not some radical change in the format of K-Rock, I know what I like. In the past couple years there have been 3 or 4 new stations introduced here in Edmonton and those pulled quite a few listeners away from K-Rock dropping ratings.
Posted by: jonedmonton (Guest), September 1, 2006, 12:54am; Reply: 20
Lets not forget that both The Bear and K-Rock dropped heavy metal not that long ago. But I still have to believe that K-Rock and The Bear are fighting over an ever dwindling audience.
But, then again, I never cease to be amazed at how many JACK-inspired formats each major market in Western Canada seems to be able to support with something less than atrocious ratings.
Posted by: maxstout, September 1, 2006, 7:28am; Reply: 21
But how could The Bear be slipping... they've got Nicleback. :X
Joe and Big Earl seem to fit the Jack format. Their playlists are all over the place. As for K-Rock, they are currently winding up their "Dog Days of Summer" program where anyone can call in and request most any song. If they've got it, they'll play it. And it sounds like the DJ's are into it. It's radio with a more personal touch both on the listeners and the DJ's part. It has made the programs more interesting to listen to and not the same old tracks over and over ad nauseam.
As for The Bear, I myself can't be bothered. The New Rock just seems to be too depressinig and System Of A Down sounds like a Deep Purple rip-off to me.
Sorry, getting off topic here.
Terry Evans maybe got tired of the stagnant format and decided that he didn't want to be a part of it anymore. Pure speculation. I enjoyed the morning show while he was a part of it and I still do even if it is just Steve and Bill for now. I listened to the morning show for the talk and not so much the music. Currently being able to request a song has made the radio show that much better. IMO.

In Edmonton, JOE and Big Earl are certainly using the Jack approach, as you mention. But then there is CAM-FM, for certain. But wouldn't a "No Rules" format be considered Jack-like? Haven't listened lately, but that was what The Bear was doing at the beginning of the year.
Posted by: maxstout, September 1, 2006, 6:24pm; Reply: 23
CAM-FM?? Don't know that one. I'll have to check it out.
I agree, a "No Rules" format is a type of Jack format. But then again certain stations don't have some songs on their existing playlists that would fit their genre or target audience. I noticed this when some listeners to K-Rock would request a song and the station would substitute a different song just because the request wasn't in their inventory. I'm starting to wonder if the "Dog days of Summer" campaign is a test on NewCap's part to see if song requests should become a mainstay with K-Rock. I don't know if this means a lot more effort on the DJ's part but I think it would be good.
Just checked out CAM-FM and it appears that it is also a NewCap station. It would seem that the Jack format has taken hold in a big way. I never realised this until now because I never paid it much attention. I only signed onto this forum to see what was happening with Terry Evans and I'm picking up so much more. Great.
Also consider the fact that more people are coming to Alberta with different backgrounds and this station format seems to appeal to a lot of them. I guess you could say good call on NewCap's part.
Posted by: CWL, September 1, 2006, 6:28pm; Reply: 24
If you need to "test" out if people would like to be able to request songs... there is a major disconnect going on.
Posted by: maxstout, September 1, 2006, 6:36pm; Reply: 25
You got that right! But it seems that requests went out the door a long time ago. Probably a form of cost cutting and streamlining. I know a lot of people that hate the canned radio format and prefer to listen to their own CDs.
Posted by: EDman, September 1, 2006, 6:41pm; Reply: 26
There's always room for requests, especially in the noon request hour format. CISN and K ROCK have been successful with it for many years.
Posted by: maxstout, September 1, 2006, 6:47pm; Reply: 27
I don't think a one hour request window is enough. Even I was getting fed up with the same songs being played over every day. If it's request radio all day, there will be people calling in. And I don't know if the noon hour requests have been that succesful for K-Rock.
Posted by: CWL, September 1, 2006, 6:47pm; Reply: 28
exactly. Requests don't NEED to be all the time, but they are easy enough to fit in, or set aside some day parts for. I personally enjoy them and they don't feel like more work... the time flies by taking the calls and chopping up the calls for broadcast. With a computer, the actual finding of the tracks is really easy and painless. I could see that back in the day, digging through the library would be a hassle (even young me has been there before :) )

Then in that case have morning commute, lunch hour and evening commute request periods. On the weekends have requests during the evenings. Fill in the rest with the regular programming.
Posted by: Radioguru, September 1, 2006, 7:03pm; Reply: 30
Here's something to think about. When I did request shows I received a minimum of 200 requests per hour. (that didn't include the hangups I got along the way) Do the math: I can only play a maximum of 10 -12 songs per hour, that means I had 180 pissed off listeners per hour. Not to mention all the time it took to explain that the majority of my listeners didn't want to hear cut 5 of an album that never made the charts. What if the other listeners wanted to hear cut 2 instead,,,then I was really screwed. If that's the case all college stations should be # in in their markets because they play what the people want. How bout an all request TV station? Everyone could call in and request their favorite shows whenever they wanted it...who needs a schedule...just play what they want.
Posted by: maxstout, September 1, 2006, 7:18pm; Reply: 31
Well that is an eye-opener for me. I forgot about all the fanatic callers who all think that you must be there to play their request right now. I can see now why request radio has been stifled.
200 hundred calls an hour... that is nuts. And you are right about those callers that don't get their request played. Pissed off!

The morning show will not be the same. Terry will be missed. I wish you all the best. I thought somthing was wrong when Stev started being a little more nicer LOL.
Posted by: maxstout, September 1, 2006, 7:33pm; Reply: 33
Yup! Steve has toned it down a bit. Bill was never too rude but he also has a TV image he has to consider. If K-Rock brings in a third man for the morning show again, we'll have to wait and see where the morning show is going to go. Who is going to be the lead hand? Steve or the new guy?
Posted by: Glen Imlach, September 1, 2006, 7:42pm; Reply: 34
Will I glad I am not the only one that thinks that. I guess there going to some kind of change to the morning show I heard on the radio today. I would like to see Bill be the lead hand.
