Corus Edmonton has fired a lot of people lately. What's going on there?
Mike with Paul Brandt before his benefit show for Slave Lake. The night raised $150,000!!!
PSR contacted Corus Edmonton and it was confirmed, Mike McGuire and CISN have parted company... No further information available.
From a promotions host to overnights to middays to Afternoon Drive personality, Mike worked at CISN for 8 years. One of Mike's great contributions with the station was his personal involvement with charities. CISN Country fans will miss Mike
Pretty sure I read on here a while back that Corus in the West would be making a lot of moves. Mind you, the focus of the thread was primarily on INews 880 but it sure looks like they have done just that. I also see that Joe is looking for an APD/MD .

Although I sympathize with those who have been let go, why all the negativity? Let's face it, this isn't about charity, Corus has a business to run. This is the Entertainment business and when the numbers fall, it's time for change. Good example is JOE FM... Corus spent the bucks to bring in a new PD last year, Why? Because Joe, who once reigned as one of the top contenders in this town had become an 'Also Ran'. Change is good... the new PD has now put in a new morning and afternoon drive guy, and having heard Jonny, this guy is Good! I have no doubt Joe FM will be back in the drivers seat and soon, challenging for the top spot in the market. Isn't this what radio is all about?
Looking around at Corus stations in Calgary and let's not forget the once super giant CKNW in Vancouver, there's room for concern, and justifiably. NW is loosing their audience, it's time to do something. CHQR in Calgary seems to be holding fort, but for how long? My point is, no one is indispensable, including McGuire. From my perspective, the station felt they had to go in another direction, which is good business sense. I don't believe this is a reflection on Mike McQuires talent and ability as a broadcaster. In fact the man is known as a self-promoter, maybe it was a matter of too much 'self'? Perhaps it's the best thing that happened to him, maybe his niche will be another town or city. From reading his bio, he's obviously learned a great deal working at CISN, just look at how he progressed, from PR department, to on air overnights, to mid days to pm drive. McQuire gained mightily by working with the station over his 8 year tenure. He could very well be good management material. Let's not underestimate his talents, nor the decisions of a company like Corus.
McGuire will land on his feet shortly. I think he was the only one there who really TRULY cared about the music. He did more with the music than anyone, that's for sure. I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at that new station in Kelowna that Troy Scott is running for Newcap. Those boys are relatively tight...
It's all about money. The new guy won't be making near what Mike was making. You'd be amazed at what drive pays now in Edmonton. Got it straight from a PD at a highly rated station.
It's true. Has been for a long time. Afternoon Drive has people 'really listening/retaining/enduring'. Morning Drive's been fleeting ever since people had to work so many jobs, and find their multimedia before heading out the door. Oh, and we can't forget the screaming kids. They tend to use up attention span, too ;-)
