Heard from one of my radio buddies in the Hat. CJCY has fired their Mid Day Announcer Corinne Bolt, and Afternoon Guy Jeff Michaels. They have also fired their Creative Director. Less than a day after the firings, there's a new voice on the PM show, and CJOC Lethbridge Mid Day announcer Erin Lucas is doing Mid Days...not sure if she has moved to Medicine Hat or is voice tracking.
It sounds like the Big City attitude of "cleaning house" has found it's way into small city Alberta.

Come on Headphone Hair, this is hardly the first time any company has made changes in markets like Medicine Hat. A little harsh don't you think? Not saying I support anyone losing their jobs, but to suggest this is something new in markets like Medicine Hat or Lethbridge or Red Deer size is a huge stretch. Happens all the time.

I feel for the folks who may have lost jobs in this move but it happens every day and not just in the radio industry.  It's sad but a reality of life no matter what you do for a living if you are an employee and don't work for yourself.

These types of posts suggesting that this change is something "new" that's suddenly come from the big city is just not accurate.

My feelings precisely. The Hat is still very competitive. Although I too, am sorry for those who lost their jobs. It's obvious these people were not performing up to expectations and it's time to make changes. Nothing wrong with that, it's called Good BUSINESS Sense!

What I'm curious about is, if this were Pattison or Astral or Corus or any of the other "corporations", some posters would be all over this like white on rice.  Not totally sold this was "performance-related" as it looks like Clear Sky is trying to centralize more of their operations in Lethbridge.  I must say though, you look at what those two stations are now compared to what they were when they first launched a few years ago, and it's quite different (music, news, on-air).  But so goes the "business" nowadays.

Fully agree.

There's post after post on here about big corporate consolidation and how it's the downfall of the business, yet when a small operator does the same thing it's called "GOOD BUSINESS SENSE"?

Perhaps that same "good business sense" would justify Clear Sky selling its operations to a bigger company?

Two single stations (CJOC/CJCY), in two competitive markets where numerous midsize players don't have a presence...
Bets on a Vista or NewCap or Harvard takeover by the end of the year?
Golden West anyone?

Personally, I think NewCap will be the owner within a year.

---> to those that lost their jobs, my condolences.  Look forward to your next opportunity. You never know what doors this turn of events may open for you.

Kind of think you guys are over analyzing this particular move a bit.  The afternoon drive guy who got canned has already been replaced by a new 2-person show originating in Medicine Hat and they are advertising for a creative writer on another site so sounds like they have/will hire at least the same number of local staff who were let go.  Sounds like just a good old fashion programming shakeup to improve the product to me.

Again, always sad to see people get let go but given replacements are already on air or being advertised for, this doesn't smell like a cost cutting move at all.

New drive team by the way is Renn Davies who was in Red Deer at one time and I think Grand Prairie more recently and a girl named Courtenay Amerlow (sp??).

Do you mean Grande Prairie AB or Grand Prairie TX?

Shoot, my spelling is bad in two instances!  Grande Prairie, Alberta.  Q99 I think is where he came from.  Spelling and grammar is apparently not my strength!

Anyone else notice that Clear Sky is looking for a PD for both stations now?  Changes do happen but wow for turnover recently.

Yes, Brent Young had the gig there for just over a year. Guys there tell me he was based out of Red Deer, and only spent a couple days a week in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. Apparently, he's moving into sales for Pattison in Red Deer.

Just curious.  I'm not management, but what, precisely, is the difference between "firing" and "layoff?"  In this business they both look the same.
Help?

firing is you screwed up. Layoff is usually management screwed up and you're not in the budget.
