Larry and Willy have been noticeably missing from their JACK 96.9 Vancouver morning show since Wednesday. Listeners are hearing, "Terry Chan in for Larry and Willy".
And Gord Lansdell at his Northwest Broadcasters "recent news" site is speculating about the implications. He is not known for publishing unfounded information.
To quote Gord, "did the duo start vacation mid-week or is there more to this story? The program's veteran news broadcaster Kerry Marshall was released last week after a ten year run with the station. Stay tuned."
I had the pleasure of working with all three when The Fox and LG moved into the TD Tower after being bought by Corus. Like then, Kerry got the boot and the dynamic duo followed with their move and brought back their long-time side-kick! If it is true they have parted ways, they will land on their feet somewhere in the Wet Coast city and when they do...watch for Kerry to return! Unless of course he is in his right mind! LOL
Perhaps that big bag 'o cash they used to woo Kid over across the bridge was so big they had to make some serious pay cuts. I guess we'll soon see whether or not that roll of the dice will pay off or whether yet another format change for 104 is in the works 18 or so months down the road.
It's always titillating to speculate, but cool down folks. It was a short week in Canada and the U-S, so why wouldn't they be off for a few days? As for Marshall (Holley), he's had a great run reworking wire copy with his dry, sarcastic read. The only gig he'd likely ever get again would be as a part of a Larry & Willy package somewhere. But that ain't likely to happen.
Considering that Larry & Willy are still very prominently included on the Jack Vancouver website, I think Mr. Lansdell may be guilty of helping in some unintended ratings scam. Just kidding.
Unless some confirmation of Gord's rumour surfaces we should probably conclude that L & W are just on vacation.
Ah yes... but Larry and Willy were on vacation for a couple of weeks before Kerry Marshall left... and then they were back for a day or two... and then they were mysteriously gone again the day following Kerry's departure. And in their place was a harried-sounding voice who was intro'ing traffic and news. Terry Chan appeared the day after that. It's all very mysterious.....
Yeah, probably just a rumour. But if I was making the big bucks in this bottom line/accountant friendly/corner office/suit driven industry, I'd be worried about my future these days.
That would make one hell of an imaging liner for a station your listening to "bottom line/accountant friendly/corner office/suit driven industry" insert station here.
.... then they were mysteriously gone again the day following Kerry's departure...
So the assumption some of us are making, just to spell it out clearly, is their disappearance is related to Kerry being fired.
Either because Larry & Willy's objections have risen to the level of a fullscale strike, or because something they said about it either on or off the air has led to their suspension.
Because we at PSR have a high regard for Gord Lansdell's reporting record, he must know something to have posted what he did.
Anybody on the inside with hard information would be most welcome here.
As I noted in my earlier post, when Corus cut Kerry loose, the daring duo followed shortly after, inked their new $$$ deal and brought back their long-time friend and stable mate! Did it happen again? we shall see what we shall see!

Bingo! When Larry and Willy signed with Rogers, it was a package deal which included Kerry Marshall. L&W's contract with Rogers included a few golden nuggets. With Rogers move of firing Mr. Marshall, they didn't reckon the protest of Larry and Willy who are sticking to their guns, which I should think so, after all a contract is a contract, Right? In the meantime the boys are sitting this out extending their summer vacation in the process.
Let's also keep in mind Larry and Willy's contract only has another year to go. Considering their numbers have been on the decline recently, anythings possible.
Not to forget the million dollar contract addition of Kid Carson to sister station SonicNation at 104.9. Rumours have been rampant of a possible flip in addresses for both stations. Sonic moving down to 96.9, Jack up to 104.9.

all the rumours on here are adorable... but this one makes me scratch my head unless someone can explain the science behind it. How could flipping frequencies ever be good for either station?... unless one freq has better reach than the other? I live in Victoria and they both blast in fine.
And would it be worth the massive $ in rebranding two stations and the big dice roll that is throwing all your listeners from your only two FMs to the wind to hope they land where they should?
If Sonic flips its because all the kids are listening to radio in the 94-97 range.. Sonic would slide nicely between The Beat and Virgin.
But I'm not a CRTC expert.. would they allow another top 40ish station in Vancouver? I thought Sonic only "existed" because technically it's a Chillwack license.
CRTC doesn't regulate mainstream music formats. They can do what they want.
A move to 96.9 does make some sense. The CRTC's been on Rogers for not serving the city of license with 104.9. Sonic working requires a real, clear, Vancouver focus. If they're just going to jukebox Jack, they'd might as well put it on 92.5/104.9.
