Excerpted from Greg Douglas' Vancouver Sun column June 16 2012:
SHORT HOPS: Baseball yarns were flowing freely in a corner of Cardero's this week with former Canadians' GM Jack Quinn joining C's president Andy Dunn and long-time Mounties broadcaster Jim Robson. The laughter was bouncing off the docked boats throughout Coal Harbour. Dunn and his C's front office staff contributed in no small way to the Challenger Baseball Appreciation Day at Delbrook Park in North Vancouver earlier this week. The kids were particularly pleased when play-by-play announcer Rob Fai did some mock broadcasting for three games over the public address system.
Are you ready for the Dave & Dave open line sports talk show on CKNW? It starts Monday (9 p.m. to midnight) with Dave Pratt and Dave Sheldon for seven weeks while Dan Russell is on holidays.
END ZONE: Former Giants hockey play-by-play man and TV sports anchor Dan Elliott is about to be named media relations manager of UBC Athletics. Elliott was an all-star linebacker and former captain of the Thunderbirds in the 1990s, including the 1997 Vanier Cup champion-ship squad.
Two Daves don't make a Dan. As long as Pratt is on the air Russell can enjoy his holidays . . . he'll have nothing to worry about. Come August 4 the Corus faithful will return.
I can't stand these guys. Especially Sheldon. All he wants to talk about is friggin' golf. And not just professional golf, but HIS OWN damn golf game. Like we give a sh-- about his golf game.
Rule #1 in broadcasting: Don't go on about yourself.
Well I for one am interested in giving this duo a fair shot. Haven't tuned into Dan R. (a former inspiration of mine) for more than a few minutes at a time, for years now. I just don't hear much genuine passion from him anymore, and his show lacks variety and repeats/replays too much content.
Go get 'em Pratt, bring us the goods. Bash the Canucks sure, but there is a wide world of sports out there. Prime Time Sports puts all the Vancouver jock chat to shame.

I stopped listening to Pratt a few years ago, way to many "crown and Coke" jokes, to many "leather pants" giggles, to many stories about "what I did this weekend". For me, Pratt was all about..... Pratt! All about the Pratt EGO, so I hit the switch.
I thought, maybe the NW PD would get ahold of him, and tell him it's not about him (Gee I remember Mr. Russell going through the same thing!) told him this is his last chance at the Big Dance, last kick at the can so to speak, and he needed to talk about sports .... only. Whatever happened, it seems to have worked.
Tuned in last night, for me, it wasn't bad at all .. emjoyable and quite a bit of energy, compared to the slowwww as a turtle and void of any emotion host, Dan R.
It was just sports. No "CRown and Coke" no "leather pants" no "Roxy" bits ..... I will listen again.

I haven't listened yet, but with your comments I think I will. And when you say "whatever happened..." I think you've mentioned the essential ingredient in the remediation of Dave Pratt: seven months of unemployment, with nobody knocking on your door.
I wonder how Russell feels about this arrangement after Friday's show.
Pratt and co-host Mitch Berger were in full "bro" mode - lots of talk about women, Pratt's lecherous little laugh, and a who's hottest poll. The week started well for Pratt but Friday was juvenile.
A friend who was listening to the show last night told me that Dave Pratt got his long-awaited showdown with Gregor Robertson over bike lanes and other irritations, and basically got his ass kicked. Anybody else hear it that way?
Have to agree the Friday show brought back the crown royal talk as well had some of Mitch's old high school sweeties calling up (hasn't the guy heard of classmates.com if he thinks he missed out in high school). It was also sprinkled in with talk about some wild antics later on that night with women at Whistler.
It's all about Pratt! Always has been. Why would he start a sports show with inane chat about the weather or any other non-sports subject nightly? Why would he insist on getting not only 'top' billing but 'only' billing to the detriment of Dave Sheldon? Hurry back Dan!

Just give us the news, and shut the hell up.
LOL Well, in talk radio, there really are NO RULES, people, especially if you happen to be a boring piece of sh*t, like many of you on air types happen to be ! LOL
Both types of talk radio "succeed," from Rush Limbough's ass-scratching self-deprecation, to Larry King's tendency to make his subordinates and "paid staff" do all of his research and dirty work for him, (a model often copied by other talk show hosts like Mr. Russell, BUT, not limited to Dan Russell).
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
The main difference between Dan Russell and Dave Pratt is that Pratt is like the veteran reliever about to be sent down to the minors and may never appear in the show again ? Therefore, he comes in from the bullpen late in the game to keep Russell's audience (and game?) from running away...
Therefore, he has nothing to lose over seven weeks...cause all he can do is throw "heat" and he won't get tired out...As long as he doesn't stumble on air, he still remains in the show...
However, one screw-up or shellacking and back he goes... to the soup kitchens of walla walla and tallahassee...
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
So yeah, he's going like gangbusters, now, But, let's see Mr. Pretty boy START every game and then we'll find out... how the energy level starts to drop...
You know, instead of bringing David Pratt in from the bullpen, I would bring in another journeyman; "lefty" Brook Ward... ????
Ward is a brilliant, fabulous sports mind, and is much like David Pratt. minus the ego and the b.s., if you ask me, and many people would also agree with that comment, too !
Also, Brook Ward remarkably sticks to sports during his shows and he doesn't need "crutches" like politician interviews and even hollywood gossip to make it fly...like U KNOW HOO ? and for that matter, that ESPN idiot, Tom Looney ?
I agree that David Pratt's talking about himself is not only rude, but is BORING SH*T, much like a man pleasuring himself in public?
Funny, but we NEVER see a Brook Ward or a Dan Russell do a PEE WEE HERMAN in public...
Why do you think that is, David Pratt ?
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
- HWNN ( fyi, I am neither Brook Ward or Squire and have never met those two, as a matter of fact !)
