just announced on the 5pm news that tonight's 10pm CHEK cast will be his last. will still be seen on CHEK at 6pm via CBC. so we're back to the way it was for so long, Tony at 6 and somebody else at 10.....just different stations this time around.
For the first time in ages I watched Tony do the news last night. Now in his 70's I asked myself why in the heck does he stay on? Is it pride, ego, need for money, a reason to get up in the morning?
His voice continually cracks, he stumbles, mumbles and really is a fraction of the once great newscaster he once was.
It was also quite the sight, Tony handing off to the CHEK sportscaster who looks about 14.
For the first time in ages weatherman Ed Bain was live with his late evening forecast, just so he could say adieu to Tony Parsons.
It's sad but quite true, there are a number of female anchors attached to CHEK who have filled in for Tony from time to time, who seemed surprisingly more capable than him.
At least they would have read the copy over in advance, whereas it was frequently obvious that Tony was reading the copy cold from the teleprompter, with the consequent errors in phrasing.
Tony's still my favourite newscaster, and his sidekick Gloria on the main CBC gig is great too. That young whippersnapper that took his place at Global is just not my cup of tea, he seems phoney and insincere somehow.
Say what you will about the "old man" reading the news, but for my money, a Tony Parsons at 75% of what heused to be, is still miles ahead of some of the "BCIT" presenters at 100%.

That would be true, if Tony were still producing on CHEK at 75%. He still appears very authoritative in his CBC work, but too often at 10 pm on CHEK he has been "phoning it in."
IMHO, he's been more like 40% of his old self in his late evening work, perhaps figuring that's all he has to do for 'the little station that could.'
