BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- It’s the end of an era for Bellingham broadcasting icon KVOS-TV.
It’s been sold to a company controlled by Dell Computers founder Michael Dell.
OTA Broadcasting of Virginia took the keys to the station Tuesday at noon.
Former KVOS Chief Photographer, Producer and News Director Jim Browder says 22 employees from Bellingham, Orcas Island and Seattle received severance packages.
He says the sale means a loss of at least $800,000 in yearly wages to the local economy, as well as all the news and programming those employees produced.
He says the new owners will continue to operate KVOS as a publicly-licensed TV station, although they may be interested in selling the station's on-air frequency at the FCC's next bandwidth auction.
KVOS-TV has served the Bellingham community since 1953. Its call letters stand for "Kessler's Voice of Seattle," which was the radio station started by Louis Kessler that later evolved into KGMI.
According to this Real Estate website, the above building, the former home of KVOS-TV, is listed for sale at $1,000,000.
Excellent location in Bellingham between downtown and Sehome. The former KVOS TV station. Existing building with offices, studios and lots of parking. Near medical, college, retail, commercial and restaurants. High visibility with easy access.
