500 Shaw Communication employees in Western Canada lost their jobs on Wednesday.
The Calgary-based company made the layoffs as part of a corporate restructuring to make Shaw more efficient, president Peter Bissonnette said.
There will be no impact on Shaw Media, Shaw Television or Global News, he said.
About 140 people in Calgary are being laid off, many of them managers.
There were about 50 layoffs in Edmonton.
A call centre in Saskatoon employing about 50 was also shut down. The calls handled there will now be taken by a larger call centre in Winnipeg, Bissonnette said.
About 60 people on Vancouver Island were let go, and 90 employees — including warehouse workers and management — in Vancouver lost their jobs.
"It's always difficult because many of these, most of these employees have been with us some time and have made great contributions to our company," said Bissonnette. "And unfortunately, you know, this is never pleasant."
Shaw has grown dramatically over the last two years and now employs more than 13,000 people, Bissonnette said.
Mother In Law has a call centre gig with them, and was fortunate enough to still have her job at the end of yesterday, but she's gonna really miss her manager, who was real good to her.
Tough to see anyone lose their gig....no matter what they do.
I find it hard to feel sorry for Shaw, the corporation, because they are just another one of the big Edmonton head offices that followed the crowd to Calgary. My sympathy's go to those who've lost their jobs in both cities. However to Shaw I say, up your cable with a rubber ADSL line! What was Shaw's retirement pension ?.... something like $16,000 a day !!!
Oh and didn't I read that they paid once and only once for the naming rights on the Edmonton convention centre. Perhaps with some changes to the centre the rights can be resold to a more worthy company or better still, perhaps it can be called the Edmonton Convention Centre.
Amen on this comment BJ. And don't forget....stupid is as stupid does :P!

I've heard that stupid "we're like family" and "families come first" so many times with previous employers. Family doesnt fire family now do they?
Actually most of these huge family run corporations do fire their own. You don't think Jim Jr. actually decided to retire and hand the reigns to his little brother all on his own. I'd bet my left arm that Jim Sr. fired his eldest son.
