Abbey Road studios are being put up for sale by record label EMI.

The legendary recording studios in northwest London, where The Beatles recorded many of their songs and which were immortalised on the band's 1969 album 'Abbey Road', are being offered to bidders as the label's owners, venture capitalists Terra Firma, look to reduce the company's debts, reports the Financial Times.

According to the paper the sale of the studios, located in St John's Wood, could raise tens of millions of pounds.

As well as The Beatles, Oasis, Blur, Manic Street Preachers, Pink Floyd and Radiohead are among the bands who have recorded at Abbey Road.

The studios were opened in 1931 by the Gramophone Company, which later became EMI.

It is unclear if it is just the location or the studio brand which is up for sale.
