CHEK is using the following graph to illustrate its dominance in the Island TV news battle. If our friends at A Channel have a different story, such as dominance in the demo, feel free to post it.
hahahahahaha what a joke. what desperation. Demographics are the backbone of ratings, not raw numbers. 18 plus is all they're using ? 25-54 is what matters, and they are being crushed in that demographic. This graph bundles and averages A News numbers for a 2 hour block.CHEK has isolated their half hour numbers (18 plus). At 6:30, A has outdistanced CHEK for years.CHEK may be stronger at 5 since people who watch A are still working, having not yet retired. It's doubtful A would wade into this dialogue, but look around and ask around. Who are you watching ? Who are your friends watching ? Who are your grandparents watching ?
A bet that Global Vancouver beats out both. I watch A at 5, 5.30 turn to Global national, and then with Global Vancouver. For the life of me I can't see wheere CHEK gets those numbers. Be nice to see what A shows up with. Anyone have?
1. Those are 18+ numbers - not key advertising demographics 2. A's is averaged over the 5-7 hour 3. While CHEK has some great talent, does anyone honestly believe their product is better? And how can anyone there boast about how well their Global Natioanl simulcast is doing with a straight face? Wow...we cut our news package to 30 minutes. To show you how smart we are and how proud of our decision we are, let's put it in this graph!
Compare CHEK's newscast now with their newscast four, five years ago and unfortunatly the current product does not hold up from a technical standpoint or a manpower standpoint...top level talent at CHEK is still very good and they are probably getting more out of each staff member than ever before, but the contrast is night-and-day. Picture quality still looks like crap and audio sounds like their studio is in a bomb shelter or something.
Where are your numbers airhead? Any hard evidence to support what you're saying?
hardly an airhead. They are 100% correct...this does not tell you how CHEK does in the key 25-54 demo. I'd suggest they are probably sucking wind in this key area and their viewer is 55 years of age or older. This being said, you can make numbers look like anything you want BUT if CHEK is killing in the ratings they'd have to be raking in the revenues yes? I guess that's why they're on the block along with everything else Canwest owns. Let's face it, it's a terrible news cast...tired looking, old and not relevant. Take a look at the staff, it's the WKRP of television....Les Nesman is alive and well and walks the halls of CHEK TV.

If TV Pro is with A Channel, he must know that A Channel is not one of CTV Globemedia's most desired assets. They'd like to dump all the A's as fast as possible, i.e. similar to how CanWest views CHEK & CHCH.
And there are still no hard numbers posted to support any A News claims.
(PS .. Just for the record, I think A News is qualitatively superior, but I'd still like to see the numbers.)
Airhead is the guy's screen name, lol, I was just looking for his hard numbers. As for raking in the advertising bucks, nobody in tv is doing that these days, especially not A-Channel. They offer their production for nothing to try to snap clients away from CHEK. But ya get what ya pay for ;)
A-Channel has a reputation for kissing ass all over town trying to gain advertisers and was notorious for practically giving away air time. That apparently came to end when CTV brass took a look at the books and got them to start charging in line with the rest of the company. As for quality of on-air product, the difference isn't that great, considering Broad Street has likely double the staff at this point as CHEK! (Let us also not forget the huge bucks being paid out to one H. H. Mack.)

LOL indeed, mea culpa. I agree that no one is doing well these days but don't be fooled by the posturing from CTV head office. They are looking for serious concessions from the CRTC and so they're blowing lots of smoke. Canwest on the other hand is in serious trouble and I (along with most financial analysts) would be surprised to not see them go under at the end of this month. I guess they might still pull it out but I just can't see how especially after reading the globe and mail story on Friday. You can almost hear the shuffling on the deck of the Titanic as everyone fights for their position in the life boat. I also know that A offered their commercial production for free...Canwest took a more novel approach and canned the entire commercial production department back in the fall. This certainly made the product more accessible to clients and guaranteed top quality. (serious tongue in cheek)
The commercial production that was once at CHEK is continuing on an independent basis. The rest of the staff, what's left of them, are hanging on by a thread. I wonder which would be worse? Having been laid off, or waiting to be? Anyway, rumours persist but the future, as they say, is wide open.
I still have major concerns about CHEK's viability in light of Canwest Media's inability to pay their bills. With Canwest's reckless destroyal of the heart of the station, I'm not sure anyone is going to want to buy it. Maybe CHEK's union should look at what CHCH is doing in Hamilton, in case worse-comes to worse.

already laid off would be better in my opinion. Those that got buy outs will be counting their blessings when (and if) Canwest goes south. Someone told me that labour canada only expects a company to pay a month of salary in a situation where the company goes under and that's all she wrote...no safety net of any kind. I don't know for sure but I've heard that a few times. For the sad folks left at the good ship titanchek it has to be a frightening prospect.
